I don’t know if you still can find this type of display anywhere – maybe in some smaller train stations or elsewhere. These were great way to display info in a bigger scale until LED based displays pushed them out. This equipment can be a great resource for some cool projects like digital clocks or any message display.
In this case display were used for simple digital clock controlled by PIC12F683. This is total remake of original control interface. Microcontroller sends signals to flipping motors via opto-couplers and read IR sensor data indicating segment count. Display is a bit too noisy for use as a regular clock – especially at home. But outside or at workplace this would fit just fine.
