The 1-Wire Parasite-Power Digital Thermometer – DS18S20 Thermometer

Most of you here have been involving yourself in the electronic project, which it requires Thermometer. However, have you ever used the DS18S20 Thermometer before, where it’s a 1-Wire parasite-power digital thermometer?

For your information, the DS18S20 digital thermometer provides 9-bit Celcius temperature measurements and it has an alarm function with non-volatile user-programmable upper and lower trigger points. The DS18S20 is communicates over a 1-Wire bus that by definition requires only one data line for communication with a central microprocessor. Beside that, it also has an operating temperature range of -55°C to +125°C and is accurate to ±0.5°C over the range of -10°C to +85°C. By the way, the DS18S20 can derive power directly from the data line (“parasite power”) and eliminate the need for an external power supply.

Each of the DS18S20 has a unique 64-bit serial code that allows multiple DS18S20 to function on the same 1-Wire bus. Hence, it is simple to use one microprocessor to control many DS18S20 distributed over a large area. Application that can benefit from this feature may include HVAC environmental controls, temperature monitoring systems inside buildings, equipment, process monitoring and control systems!

  1. I have only tried reading data from the DS18S20 via a small NSLU2 computer, but it works well too. RRDtool and OWFS software gives me some great looking graphs.
